We're nearly safe, says Ameobi

The Magpies won promotion back to the Premier League last summer and they have performed well on their return to the big time. Pardew's side have coped with the sale of England international Andy Carroll and Saturday's success means they now have 39 points. Retaining their top-flight status was their immediate goal after promotion and Ameobi, who netted in the 4-1 success, thinks they are nearly there. The club's long-serving striker knew it was a crucial game against Wolves and was delighted his team-mates handled the pressure of the occasion. "It was a big game, there was pressure on us, but we've come through it well," said Ameobi. "Relegation was mentioned, we don't kid ourselves. Two years ago we didn't take it as seriously, we thought we'd be fine, even when we slipped into it, even when we were losing games. "Nobody is safe, we're still not. Before the match, from 11th down, all the teams were in touching distance of the bottom three. It's great we've come away from this game and we're nearly there." Ameobi has been wearing a protective mask since fracturing his cheekbone against Fulham and he is relieved he is at least able to play. However, the 29-year-old cannot wait to play without the mask and is thankful he is available for selection having feared his season was over. "My face hurts though. It's sore, really sore," he continued. "Every time I head the ball, the mask is hard plastic so it smashes against your face. "I got a boot in the face, the back of someone's head in the face. It's all part and parcel of it. "The mask has given me a chance to play and that's what I wanted. I don't wear it at home. My little daughter would be too scared. My goal was a header, so the mask is working. I've got used to it. When I catch the ball right on the forehead it's fine, but you're never going to get it on your forehead all the time and it really hurts when you don't. "The surgeon wants me to wear it until the end of the season but I can't wait to ditch it. "I thought my season was over when I got the injury. I wouldn't say it was a shock when I found out about the mask, I watch a lot of basketball so I knew there were these sorts of masks being used. I mentioned it first. I was desperate to play, especially with the position we are in."
