Seeing the field covered in snow before the United States played Mexico, Abby Wambach had an idea.
``We were walking out before the game started and I said, 'If anybody scores, snow angels for sure,''' Wambach said.
She wound up setting off the celebration herself, scoring her 105th international goal to help the United States won Wednesday night's exhibition game 1-0.
``Abby's goal was great,'' U.S. coach Pia Sundhage said. ``I thought she was the best player on the field.''
Wambach put the United States ahead in the 60th minute, when defender Amy LePeilbet served a ball into Kristine Lilly at the top of the box.
Lilly sent it to Shannon Boxx on the near side, and she cut toward the goal before firing past Mexico goalkeeper Erika Vanegas to Wambach inside the far post for a tap-in.
The snow, which didn't completely cover the field, but made it more white than green, made for sloppy passes and the ball's path was often unpredictable.
``It was a hard game to stay patient and wait for those moments and opportunities,'' Wambach said. ``We got a lot of opportunities, but if they were good opportunities, that's for somebody else to decide because the surface was so difficult.''
For the match, Mexico managed just four shots and put just two on goal. Mexican forward Maribel Dominguez could not get behind the U.S. back line to create any opportunities.
Lilly made her 328th start - and first since 2007 - on Wednesday night to extend her U.S. and world records for most starts in international competition.
