Vuoso fires Club America to victory
Matias Vuoso scored in the 86th minute to hand Club America a 2-1 victory over Mexico City rivals Pumas on Sunday in round 11 of Mexico's Clausura football championship.
The result moves America into third place on 22 points, while Pumas is in 13th on 11 points.
Santos Laguna remains in first place after defeating Cruz Azul 1-0 on Saturday and Morelia is second, also on 23 points, second trailing on goal difference following its 2-1 win Friday against Estudiantes Tecos.
In other weekend results, Tigres beat Club Tijuana 1-0, Toluca drew 1-1 with Monterrey, Pachuca defeated Atlante 3-2, Queretaro and Chivas drew 0-0, Jaguares defeated Atlas 3-0 and San Luis won 1-0 over Puebla.
In the Estadio Azteca, Christian Benitez converted a penalty in the 9th minute for America after Jose Maria Cardenas was brought down by Jose Antonio Garcia.
Pumas goalkeeper Alejandro Palacios made two crucial saves before Pumas also won a penalty, which Juan Carlos Cacho calmly slotted into the bottom right corner in the 58th.
Vuoso lifted the ball over Palacios when he was clean through on goal to score the winner for America, five minutes after Garcia had been sent off for a late challenge.
On Saturday, Colombian Darwin Quintero scored with a right-footer in the 43rd minute to give Santos Laguna the three points.
The league leaders had Jesus Armendariz sent off in the 73rd and Aaron Padilla sent off in second half injury time, with Emanuel Villa coming close to equalizing for Cruz Azul with a volley in the 89th.
Santos Laguna's Oribe Peralta had put a penalty wide in the 9th.
In Friday's match, Gerardo Lugo scored twice in the first 25 minutes for Morelia against relegation-threatened Estudiantes Tecos.
Fredy Bareiro pulled one back six minutes after halftime and Chilean veteran Rodrigo Ruiz struck a penalty over the crossbar in the 63rd.
Adrian Aldrete was sent off for the challenge that led to the penalty.
Estudiantes Tecos are now seven points adrift at the bottom of the relegation table, with six games of the season remaining.
Tigres' Lucas Lobos scored from the penalty spot against Tijuana in the 9th minute.
The result means reigning champions Tigres are unbeaten in 24 games at home and are in fourth place, one point behind the leaders, and behind America on goal difference.
On Sunday, substitute Neri Cardozo equalized for Monterrey in the 79th, after Uruguayan Ivan Alonso had scored his tenth goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 33rd for Toluca.
Argentina's Mauro Cejas scored three goals for Pachuca on Saturday. The first two came in the first eight minutes of the game before Juan Ezequiel got one back in the 34th for Atlante and Jorge Guagua equalized three minutes after halftime.
Cejas slotted in the winner one minute from the end, after Guagua had been sent off in the 56th minute.
Chivas extended their unbeaten run to four league games after a disastrous start to the season, but the 0-0 draw on Saturday wasn't good enough to move Queretaro off the bottom of the table in a game of few clear chances.
Colombian Jackson Martinez scored two second half goals for Jaguares against Atlas, with compatriot Luis Gabriel Rey getting the first in the 41st.
San Luis won for the first time since the second round of matches on Jan. 13, with Peru's Wilmer Aguirre scoring a penalty in the 73rd.
Aldo Polo was sent off for Puebla in the 64th.
