Vokes - Derby point deserved

Burnley's derby hero Sam Vokes believes that their 1-1 draw with Blackburn on Sunday was fully merited.

Wales international Vokes came on as boss Sean Dyche's last throw of the dice in the 86th minute and sent Turf Moor into raptures three minutes later when he headed home Junior Stanislas' free-kick.

Blackburn withstood a first-half onslaught before Jordan Rhodes converted Mauro Formica's cross midway through the second period.

"It's fantastic to get off the bench and get the equaliser because I thought we played well and deserved it in the end," said Vokes.

"I think we were the stronger side, especially in the first half. They came back and obviously scored a goal in the second half, then late on we showed with the pressure that we deserved a goal."

The prolific form of team-mate Charlie Austin has seen Vokes operate almost exclusively as a substitute since joining Burnley permanently from Wolves in the summer and the 23-year-old was delighted to make such a key contribution in his latest cameo.

"It's just instinct isn't it? It's a great ball in from Ju, on the button as he always is, and it's good to get the flick on it," he said.

"There was one straight after and it would have been a nice little brace but it's good to get the goal and help the lads."

His time at Molineux, along with loan spells at Sheffield United, Leeds, and Norwich, means Vokes is well-versed in some of English football's most famous local arguments and he believes Burnley versus Blackburn measures up to any of them.

"I've played in a couple, this is another fantastic one - a great derby and a great fiery atmosphere. It's what it's all about really, these are the games you want to play in as a footballer."
