Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has appealed against the red card he received in the Premier League win over West Ham.

The Belgium international was sent off in the 44th minute on Saturday for a foul on Guillermo Franco that referee Martin Atkinson ruled denied the striker a scoring opportunity.

The Football Association says it received the appeal Monday and will make a decision Tuesday on whether to uphold the card and resulting one-game ban.

Vermaelen is currently suspended for Saturday's trip to Birmingham.

Arsenal is second in the standings, two points behind defending champion Manchester United.
