Guadalajara Chivas coach John Van't Ship started his new job on Thursday, hoping to restore the fortunes of one of Mexico's most popular teams.

The Dutchman was named to the job in April by club adviser Johan Cruyff, who was appointed by owner Jorge Vergara to revamp the slumping club and its youth system.

Van't Ship replaced Ignacio Ambriz, who left the club after failing to get a new contract.

Chivas has won the most league titles in Mexico, but finished near the bottom of the just-completed Clausura championship, the second half of Mexico's split season.

The club announced last week it will play on real grass next season after removing the artificial turf it has been using.
