Valencia blanks Rangers in Spain
Roberto Soldado scored a goal in each half to lead Valencia to a 3-0 victory over Rangers in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Soldado opened the scoring at the Mestalla stadium in the 33rd minute by steering a shot through a crowded area and inside the near post.
The Spanish striker added his third of the competition from a counterattack in the 71st minute, swapping passes with Juanma Mata before burying a low shot past goalkeeper Allan McGregor.
Substitute Tino Costa capped the win by guiding a cross home off the far post in the 90th minute.
The victory took Valencia to second in Group C with seven points, while Rangers is third with five points. Manchester United beat Bursaspor 3-0 to extend its lead to 10 points, while the Turkish club is last with no points.
"The team needed a complete game to lift its confidence," Valencia coach Unai Emery said. "It was an important win since it leaves with a chance of topping the group."
Rangers, which held Valencia to a 1-1 draw at home, suffered its first defeat of the group stage.
"We had opportunities at the start of the game and if we had scored it would have changed the game," Rangers coach Walter Smith said. "We're disappointed because we had chances."
Valencia seemed keen to overturn its recent slump in both the domestic and European standings as it went on the attack early, with McGregor keeping Mata's first-time shot out in the fourth after David Albelda's precise pass.
Rangers were also a threat against the run of play, but Steven Naismith's reward for a clever run down the left and into the middle in the eighth was his shot deflecting off the far post.
McGregor saved Mata's stab soon after before Aritz Aduritz headed a clear chance wide in the 22nd.
Valencia's forward line was combining well to test McGregor, who was unlucky as Soldado managed to tuck a shot past three Rangers players to open the scoring.
McGregor kept the Scottish champions in the game as he leapt to his right to tip Aduritz's sharp header wide, and the Basque striker would have another header kept out later on.
Kenny Miller wasted a valuable chance for Rangers against the run of play in the 59th as he cut back inside the area but shot straight at Cesar Sanchez.
Soldado started the break for the second goal with a quick pass in midfield to find Mata, whose through ball gave Soldado space down the right side to shoot past McGregor.
While Maurice Edu recovered from injury doubts to play for Rangers, it was Naismith who continued to create the visitors' best chances as he touched the post again with a 82nd-minute header.
Costa capped an emphatic win on the counter as he met a floating cross at full stretch to guide past McGregor.
