USMNT target Zelalem called up to Germany Under-18s squad
Gedion Zelalem appears to have chosen to commit his international future to the United States, but Germany isn't going down without a fight.
The 18-year-old Arsenal midfielder was called up by Germany's U-18 squad for a pair of matches against France on March 27 and 30.
Zelalem obtained U.S. citizenship in Dec. 2014, just before he turned 18. Born in Germany, Zelalem lived in Maryland between the ages of nine and 15, before moving to London to join Arsenal.
Though he has obtained U.S. citizenship, Zelalem is not yet eligible to play for the U.S. He is waiting for FIFA clearance over a rule that prevents naturalized citizens from automatically being cleared to play for their new nations. The clearance process is expected to be a formality.
Zelalem has represented Germany at the youth level in the past, but turned down his most recent call-up to the U-17 side in March 2014.
Last week, U.S. national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann told reporters that he believes Zelalem is at a level where he could play for the senior U.S. national team immediately.
