American defender Oguchi Onyewu was loaned from AC Milan to the Dutch league champion FC Twente on Tuesday after failing to dress in a single game for the Italian club this season.

The move reunites the 28-year-old with Michel Preud'homme, his former coach at Belgian club Standard Liege.

Onyewu made his international debut for the United States in 2004 and played at the last two World Cups.

After signing with AC Milan before the 2009-10 season, Onyewu made just one competitive club appearance in 1 1/2 years, entering as a 60th-minute substitute against Zurich in the Champions League on Sept. 30, 2009.

He tore his left patellar tendon during a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica in October 2009. He returned from the injury last May and has played for the national team seven times since, including starts against England and Slovenia at the World Cup.

Last spring, Onyewu agreed to play for AC Milan free for a year in return for a contract extension until 2013.
