D.C. United will not extend its contract with Brazilian forward Luciano Emilio as the former Major League Soccer most valuable player leaves the team after failing to impress in a three-month trial.

Emilio, who scored 41 goals for D.C. from 2007-2009 and was picked the league's MVP in 2007 after score scoring 20, signed a three-month contract with the club earlier this season. However, the 31-year-old failed to score a goal in four matches, and made only one start.

United also announced that forward Adam Cristman will fly to Munich on Friday evening to have hernia surgery on Monday.

Cristman will return on Tuesday, then have his recovery supervised by United's medical staff.
