Ukraine beats Chile in Kiev friendly
Yaroslav Rakytskiy and Oleksandr Aliev scored Tuesday to give Ukraine a 2-1 win over Chile in a friendly it should have won more convincingly.
Rakytskiy's powerful strike in the 36th minute gave the hosts the lead, and substitute Aliev increased the lead in the 65th with a right-footed drive from well outside the area.
Mauricio Isla scored for Chile shortly before the final whistle.
Chile, missing a number of players that helped it to the last 16 at the World Cup, produced a disjointed performance.
Ukraine failed to qualify for the tournament in South Africa but is guaranteed a place at Euro 2012 as co-host with Poland, so it also fielded an experimental side under caretaker coach Yuriy Kalytvyntsev.
Ukraine dominated possession throughout and created more chances, and should have been more than one goal ahead by the break after Andriy Shevchenko slashed a wild shot over the bar having pounced on a defensive error by Chile in the 19th.
Shevchenko had another chance when put through by a deft touch from the hardworking Marko Devic in the 23rd, but he shot wide under pressure from the goalkeeper and two defenders.
It was Shevchenko's short pass from a free kick that set up Rakytskiy, who powered a low left-footed drive into the bottom corner.
Oleh Husev should have added to the lead in the 43rd, firing just over from close range after being played through by Shevchenko.
Chile started more brightly in the second half, but it was Ukraine that ensured the win with Aliev's stunning strike from 30 yards in the 65th minute after a one-two with Devic.
Ukraine sat back in the final 10 minutes and paid the price when Isla was played into the box in the 86th and fired past Dykan.
