Former Argentina international Gabriel Calderon has been appointed coach of United Arab Emirates club Baniyas.
The club said Sunday that Calderon, a former midfielder who represented Argentina at the 1982 and 1990 World Cups, had signed a contract to coach the team for the remainder of the season.
Calderon has extensive experience in the Middle East. He coached Saudi Arabia to 2006 World Cup qualification but was fired before the tournament started. He later coached top Saudi teams Al Ittihad, which he guided to the Saudi title in 2009 and the 2009 AFC Champions League final, and Al Hilal, which he led to the Saudi title earlier this year.
Baniyas is currently seventh in the UAE Pro League standings, eight points behind leaders Al Jazira.
