Coming off excellent performances with England, Tottenham winger Andros Townsend has signed a new four-year deal with the Premier League club.

Townsend, who scored in the 4-1 win over Montenegro in World Cup qualifying and starred against Poland, returned to Tottenham this season after a loan spell at Queens Park Rangers.

The 22-year-old player also found himself at the center of a controversy this week after England coach Roy Hodgson made a joke about a monkey in space during a halftime talk in the 2-0 win over Poland. Hodgson, who apologized for his remarks, said the joke was meant to encourage players to pass the ball more to Townsend.

Townsend said Hodgson's controversial comments were complimentary because ''the manager just told the players to give the ball to me.''
