Top four is vital - Mertesacker

The Gunners have made their worst start to a Premier League campaign and Sunday's win over Sunderland was only their third victory of the season. Arsene Wenger's men consequently trail fourth-placed Newcastle by six points and summer signing Mertesacker is aware they need to make up ground. "It's vital that we reach at least the top four in the league, but at the moment we don't have the points to speak about that," he told Arsenal's official matchday programme. "It's important to perform well to make sure we move up the table. The supporters have to feel we are giving everything to succeed. "I am here to play football, to play in the Champions League and I want to be successful in all the challenges we face this season. "Therefore we have to play hard games twice a week and that's the challenge of being an Arsenal player." Mertesacker was an £8million deadline day signing from Werder Bremen and has not made a significant impact on a defence which conceded eight goals at Manchester United shortly before his signing. But Wenger still thinks the giant German can follow in the footsteps of the likes of Tony Adams, Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure in becoming an Arsenal hero. Wenger said: "He is a little bit like that (Adams). Not the quickest, but he uses his brain well. Mertesacker is getting stronger in every single game. "He is getting more aggressive. I like him personally. He's a very intelligent player and will be a big asset for us." Wenger added: "I inherited a fantastic defence (in 1996), but that was not the unbeatable team, that was not the best team. The defence with Lauren, Sol Campbell, Kolo Toure and Ashley Cole was the unbeatable team. "I think Mertesacker can be a talker. Trust the Germans, he is a fighter. I am happy with what I see from him. Many times people judge you quickly. I am happy with the buys we made. I am not happy with the results, that is completely different."
