Third-division side Chemnitzer KO's Bundesliga side Mainz from German Cup
BERLIN --
Bundesliga side Mainz were knocked out of the first round of the German Cup on Friday losing on penalties to third-division Chemnitzer FC.
Mainz defender Niko Bungert's late own goal leveled the scoring at 3-3 and send the game into extra time. Both sides scored twice in extra time with Chemnitz leading 5-4 before a spectacular goal inside his own half from Johannes Geis made it 5-5 with the last kick of the game.
Chemnitz goalkeeper Philipp Pentke then saved Gonzalo Jara's spot-kick and captain Anton Fink completed the home side's perfect penalty round.
Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen advanced to the next round following a 6-0 rout of sixth-tier side Alemannia Waldalgesheim, with striker Stefan Kiessling scoring five.
Second-division Nuremberg, relegated from the Bundesliga last season, lost 1-0 at third-division Duisburg.
