Terry would welcome Rooney
Chelsea captain John Terry says he would welcome the arrival of striker Wayne Rooney at Stamford Bridge.
Rooney has sensationally told Manchester United he will not extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond the end of his current contract, which expires at the end of next season.
The 24-year-old claims he has been motivated over concerns about United's squad and is eager to move to a club where he will always be in the hunt for trophies.
Chelsea would certainly fit that bill, given the spending power of owner Roman Abramovich, and Terry knows that a stunning swoop for his England international team-mate would benefit Carlo Ancelotti's squad.
Terry said: "Wayne is the best young players in the world. I am no different to any other player in saying that.
"You obviously have to respect Manchester United and Wayne, but who knows what's going to happen.
"We've got a great squad of players and he would add to that and strengthen the squad. He is the best player in the world for me."
Meanwhile, Terry believes that Chelsea are in a position to finally land the UEFA Champions League - a trophy won twice by United under Sir Alex Ferguson - after so many near-misses in recent seasons.
He added: "It's the one trophy that's eluded myself and the club. We've come so close, we've had our bad luck, our unfortunate games.
"The Liverpool semi - was their goal over the line or not? Then there was the final against Manchester United and the semi against Barcelona when we could have had five or six penalties.
"But you have to make your own luck and dig in deep, and I really do think we have the squad to do that this year.
"That's what I believe and I think everybody in the squad believes it as well.
"We've achieved so much domestically but it would be great for us and the club to step up to that extra level."
