Szczesny eyes Gunners atonement
A depleted Arsenal side were humiliated 8-2 at Old Trafford in August, just days after an energy-sapping Champions League play-off second leg in Udinese.
Arsenal have seen their drive back up towards the top four of the Barclays Premier League halted following successive league defeats at Fulham and then Swansea.
The Gunners will be missing key men on Sunday, with on-loan forward Thierry Henry struggling to recover from a calf problem and centre-back Thomas Vermaelen unlikely to return from his injury lay-off to bolster the makeshift defence.
That could mean another busy afternoon for Szczesny, but the 21-year-old Pole is determined to raise his own performance following a couple of below-par displays.
"Obviously I want to make up for what happened at Old Trafford last time around, so I am very excited about the game," Szczesny told Arsenal Player.
"Somewhere in the back of our heads, that game will still be there and we want to make up for it.
"We just have to focus on our own game, to make sure we are at our best.
"It is motivation for us now, but as soon as we get on the pitch, we will forget about it."
Szczesny feels he can step things up on Sunday.
"The last couple of matches for me have been poor, I made some mistakes and was at fault for some of the goals," he said.
"All I can do is work hard and know that sooner or later the performances will come back.
"But you cannot blame yourself too much, you have to get on with it and move on to the next one, to make sure it does not happen again."
Wenger may be short of options at the back, but the Arsenal manager is adamant that simply going out and getting new bodies in is not the answer.
He said: "Football is not a supermarket where you go in there and say 'give me a left-back please, and a right-back and a centre-back'. We have to find the players better to what we have.
"When Vermaelen plays left-back, finding a better left-back for me is difficult. Vermaelen has missed two games, maybe another game Sunday.
"You cannot buy a player every time you have an injury, where do you stop?
"The whole of Europe is bankrupt and everyone continues to spend like nothing happened."
Wenger added: "We manage in a sensible way at Arsenal and that is why we are not bankrupt.
"Everybody spends irrespective of whether they make money or not. It is normal, but we try to spend the money we have."
