Granit Xhaka and Gokhan Inler scored to secure a 2-0 victory for Switzerland over Slovenia in their opening qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup on Friday.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's team was composed and played aggressively compared to the hosts who seemed confused and slow.

Xhaka opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he received the ball some 20 meters from the goal and fired a shot into the left-hand corner.

Slovenia's Tim Matavz had a chance to equalize in 31st on a counterattack, but goalkeeper Diego Benaglio made the save.
