Swiss club coach quits after players' vote

Bernard Challandes quit as coach of Swiss top-tier club FC Thun on Tuesday after his team voted against continuing to work with him.

Challandes asked his players if they still had confidence in him after a 3-0 loss to Lausanne-Sports at the weekend. Thun said in a statement that a ''big majority'' of the players gave their answer Tuesday, and Challandes ''accepted the consequences.''

The club said its directors were not actively involved in the process which led to Challandes leaving.

The defeat Saturday left Thun ninth in the 10-team division. Challandes's former assistant, Mauro Lustrinelli, will pick the team until the midseason break.

Challandes previously guided Zurich to the title in 2009 and into a Champions League group including Real Madrid and Milan.

Prior to joining Thun last year, Challandes had an 18-day spell coaching Neuchatel Xamax when it was Chechen-owned.

His final match there was in May 2011 when Xamax players were reportedly threatened in the dressing room at halftime of the Swiss Cup final by owner Bulat Chagaev.
