Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon has been ruled out for up to six months following knee surgery.

The Scotland international had been out injured for two months before having the operation in Sweden on Monday.

Manager Steve Bruce says ''Craig's been following a program but when the specialist had a look at the knee again, we were left with no choice but to go ahead with the surgery.''

With Bruce saying Gordon will be sidelined for four to six months, Gordon could miss Scotland's last four qualifiers for the 2012 European Championship in September and October.
