Substitute scores game's only goal to beat Celtic
Substitute Troy Hearfield curled in a shot from the edge of the area in the 87th minute to give the A-League's Central Coast Mariners a 1-0 win over Scottish league runner-up Celtic on Saturday.
New recruit Hearfield, formerly of Wellington and Newcastle, scored after Celtic failed to clear a cross from the left before more than 17,000 spectators.
Celtic plays Perth Glory next Saturday and the Melbourne Victory four days later before beginning league play in Scotland in five weeks.
Coach Neil Lennon said he was pleased with his team's effort because of the short preparation time.
''The players' condition and the quality, particularly second half, it was a remarkable performance when you consider the week they've been through,'' Lennon said. ''They've been traveling all the way over on Tuesday and Wednesday and then one day's training, played very, very well in the second half and controlled the game.''
Police arrested 11 people for various assault charges and for attempting to jump the fence at the former Olympic stadium, while about 60 were ejected or refused entry due to being intoxicated.
