Sporting Lisbon to hire Braga coach Paciencia
Domingos Paciencia will move from Europa League finalist Braga to become Sporting Lisbon's new coach, Sporting announced Monday.
Paciencia will take charge next season, Sporting said in a statement to the Lisbon stock exchange. Full details of his contract will be disclosed only after negotiations are completed. Paciencia has a contract with Braga through June 30.
Paciencia led Braga to a second-place league finish in the 2009-2010 season, behind Benfica and ahead of FC Porto.
Braga came fourth in the just-ended Portuguese season but beat Liverpool, Arsenal, Celtic and Sevilla in continental tournaments, losing to Porto in the Europa League final.
Paciencia, a 42-year-old former Portugal and Porto striker, started his coaching career in 2006 with Leiria before moving to Academica.
Sporting, once one of Portugal's top three clubs, is aiming to reverse years of decline. It has won the Portuguese title just twice in the last three decades and ended the season 36 points behind champion Porto.
Sporting fired coach Paulo Sergio three months ago and completed the season under director of football Jose Couceiro.
