Sporting Kansas City is chasing another piece of history this weekend.
The MLS club has won its first seven games in regulation. With a victory at Portland, the franchise will match the Los Angeles Galaxy of 1996 as the only teams to open a season with eight consecutive victories in regulation.
Sporting KC manager Peter Vermes played in the league during that inaugural season, when it seemed as if the Galaxy couldn't lose.
The on-field success in many ways is an extension of franchise-wide success. Sellout crowds are packing Livestrong Sporting Park, and the attention the MLS club has generated is nearly reaching the same level as the cross-town Royals, who are off to another miserable start in Major League Baseball.
