Sporting KC and D.C. United advance

C.J. Sapong scored in the 93rd minute and Sporting Kansas City held on to beat the Houston Dynamo 1-0 in overtime Wednesday night in the U.S. Open Cup qualifying round.

Kansas City advances to the Eastern Conference championship qualifying round against the winner of the D.C. United-New England's April 27 game.

Sapong received a pass from Teal Bunbury and nailed it from 25 yards out in the center into the upper right net.

Houston had chances to take the lead in the 84th minute, but Danny Cruz's shot from 20 yards out was saved by D.C. United goalkeeper Eric Kronberg.

Houston nearly tied it in the 117th minute, but Jason Garey's header from the left box was saved by Kronberg.

United knocks out Union on PKs

D.C. United beat the Philadelphia Union 4-2 in a penalty-kick shootout after the MLS clubs finished overtime tied 2-2 in a wild U.S. Open Cup play-in game that included two ejections Wednesday night.

Carlos Ruiz scored for Philadelphia in the 18th minute, then was sent off in 86th. Union coach Peter Nowak was ejected in overtime.

Josh Wolff made it 1-1 right before halftime, then Daniel Woolard put United ahead 2-1 in the 111th. Brian Carroll tied it for Philadelphia with two minutes left in the extra period.

In the shootout, United made all of their attempts. United goalie Bill Hamid saved Roger Torres' try, and Philadelphia's Jack McInerney missed his penalty kick.

United will host the New England Revolution in another play-in game April 26.
