Sporting Kansas City, manager Peter Vermes sign deal through 2019
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Sporting Kansas City has signed coach Peter Vermes to a contract extension through the 2019 season.
The only person to win an MLS Cup as a player and coach with the same team, Vermes has led the organization since 2009. He is also the team's technical director. He is the team's winningest coach and the eighth winningest in MLS history, going 103-86-61 in the regular season and 128-96-70 across all competitions.
Vermes led Sporting KC to the MLS Cup in 2013 and the U.S. Open Cup in 2012 and 2015. There had been some talk that the 50-year-old Vermes would replace Jurgen Klinsmann as coach of the U.S. national team, but that job went to Bruce Arena last week. Sporting KC announced Vermes' extension on Tuesday.
Vermes said he's been "extremely fortunate and incredibly appreciative" to be part of Sporting KC, and that he looks forward to building on the foundation that he helped to lay.
