Sporting Kansas City beats Colorado Rapids 3-2
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) Dom Dovale scored in stoppage time to help Sporting Kansas City rally for a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday.
Dovale was a late-game substitution for Sporting Kansas City (2-1-1). Benny Feilhaber tied the game in the 79th minute.
''This team does not quit - no matter the circumstances,'' Dovale said. ''We went about our business after they scored on the penalty kick that put them ahead.''
Dovale used a couple strides to get close to the goal on the left side and then ripped a shot over the outstretched hands of Colorado goalkeeper John Berner and into the upper left corner.
''It was a blazer,'' Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes said. ''Their goalie didn't have a chance.''
Graham Zusi scored and Sal Zizzo added two assists for the defending MLS Cup champions.
Vincente Sanchez had two goals for Colorado (1-1-1), both on penalty kicks.
''We'll go through what happened because it was like we shut off and they took advantage as good teams do to you,'' Rapids defender Marvell Wynne said. ''That's not going to become a return thing for us. I don't think we are going to be scored upon three or more times throughout the year.''
Zusi and Zizzo set up Feilhaber's goal with pinpoint passes.
Sanchez had barely scored his second goal in the 78th minute when Zusi was flying through midfield. He passed to Zizzo, who sent a header to Feilhaber. He then got the ball past Berrner on his second try.
Zusi put Sporting in front in the 50th minute, but Sanchez scored his third goal in the 60th minute.
Sporting Kansas City defender Ike Opara injured his right leg in the second half and was helped off the field.
