Sporting Gijon has hired former Spain coach Javier Clemente until the end of the season, hopeful he can save the club from relegation.
The 61-year-old Basque coach replaces Inaki Tejada, who stepped in for the fired Manuel Preciado but lasted only two games. Sporting is winless in four games and six points from safety.
In recent years Clemente was hired by Valladolid and Murcia to help keep those clubs up, but he failed with both. The former Serbia coach has been out of work since failing to lead Cameroon to qualification for the African Cup of Nations.
Clemente led Spain from 1992-98 and Athletic Bilbao for three spells, guiding the Basque club to a league-cup double in 1984.
