Spain leads Italy 2-0 at Euro 2012 final halftime
Spain leads Italy 2-0 at halftime in the European Championship final on Sunday and looks well set to retain its title.
David Silva scored with a header in the 14th minute, guiding a crisp Cesc Fabregas cross from the byline into the net after Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was drawn to his near post.
Defender Jordi Alba struck in the 41st, racing clear to meet a Xavi Hernandez pass and slip the ball past Buffon.
Spain relied on Iker Casillas to maintain its lead, as the captain and goalkeeper twice tipped crossed balls to safety, as Daniele De Rossi and then Mario Balotelli seemed poised to head goalwards.
Casillas also twice saved shots from Antonio Cassano.
Spain is seeking a record third straight major tournament title, after winning Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup.
