Zwolle went into the game having dropped just three points from their six games so far this season, while in contrast their opponents had lost all six of their opening top-flight games. Zwolle led twice, with Arne Slot's opener cancelled out by Maceo Rigters early in the second half then Sjoerd Ars putting the home side back in front only for Jon-Arnie van der Heijden to equalise seven minutes from time. After a goalless extra-time period the game went to penalties where Van der Heijden was the first to miss with the ninth kick. Zwolle goalkeeper Diederik Boer stepped up to secure a 5-4 penalty win. The other three top-flight teams in action all won. Third-bottom Vitesse were too strong for Topclasse side Flevo Boys, running out 6-0 winners with Ismail Aissati and Nacer Barazite each scoring twice. An early goal from Lex Immers sent Den Haag on their way to a 2-0 win at Excelsior 31, while Heerenveen were 3-1 winners at Eerste Divisie strugglers Emmen, with goals from Viktor Elm, Bas Dost and Mika Vayrynen. In an all Eerste Divisie affair Helmond Sport were surprisingly beaten 2-1 in extra-time by struggling Veendam, while goals from Dominique van Dijk and Paul de Lange saw Volendam past Topklasse side Hollandia.
