Swansea look set to miss out on Marcos Senna after he revealed he is close to signing a new deal with Villarreal.

Swansea made the Euro 2008 winner an offer following their promotion to the Premier League as his current contract is set to expire at the end of the month.

Villarreal had confirmed they were keen on keeping hold of the former Spain midfielder, though.

And although they are yet to agree terms on a new contract, Senna believes they are very close.

"Last Friday, after the gala dinner before the Formula 1 race, I had a relaxed conversation with the chairman and the coach," he was quoted as saying by EFE.

"The will of both parties is to continue together and there are only very small differences separating us at this moment."

The Brazil-born midfielder had initially entertained the idea of a move to south Wales.

But it seems the 34-year-old, who moved to Europe with Villarreal in 2002, now has his sights set on extending his stay at El Madrigal into a 10th season.

"Following the informal meeting, the president's son told me he would contact my agent on Monday," Senna added.

"I am optimistic that we will soon reach an agreement.

"I have been here a long time. I want to stay at Villarreal for many years. Well, at least for one year."
