Seattle to meet Columbus in U.S. Open Cup final
The Seattle Sounders will get a chance to defend their U.S. Open Cup title after beating Chivas 3-1 in Wednesday's semifinal while Columbus Crew downed D.C. United 2-1 in extra time.
Seattle's Nate Jaqua opened the scoring in the 10th minute following a cross from the left by Steve Zakuani, who also delivered the cross for Fredy Montero to make it 2-0 in the 58th minute.
Jesus Padilla pulled a goal back for Chivas in the 68th before Jaqua sealed the win with his second goal in stoppage time.
Columbus made it to its first U.S. Open Cup final since 2002.
D.C. United looked on course for its third straight cup final appearance when Pablo Hernandez scored from the penalty spot in the 10th minute.
However Hernandez was sent off in the 59th minute for kicking out at an opponent. Still, United held the lead until the 89th minute when Andy Iro's goalbound shot was helped in by Marc Burch on the goalline, sending the game to extra time.
Gabriel Barros Schelotto scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 98th minute after a foul by Carey Talley.
D.C. United had a chance to equalize in the 105th, but Dejan Jakovic blasted over a wide open goal.
Seattle will host the final on Oct. 5.
