Seaman reveals keeper concerns
Following Robert Green's World Cup nightmare and the decision by Paul Robinson to retire after being called up for Fabio Capello's new-look squad, the lack of strength in depth of English goalkeepers has been called into question. Indeed, following the withdrawal of Birmingham's Ben Foster from the squad to play Hungary because of injury, youngsters Scott Loach of Watford and Frankie Fielding from Blackburn were called up from the Under-21s. Former England and Arsenal stopper Seaman - who won 75 international caps between 1988 and 2002, enjoying great individual success at Euro 96 - is not surprised by the current state of affairs. "I could see it when I was playing. Clubs bought in a lot of foreign 'keepers. Lots of young English goalkeepers didn't get a chance," said Seaman, speaking at the launch of Yahoo!'s online Barclays Premier League highlights. "Look at how many number twos are now foreign. Managers seem to want this safety cushion." Seaman feels West Ham goalkeeper Green should have a future in the England squad again despite his howler during England's opening group game against the United States which set the tone for a poor campaign in South Africa. "It's going to affect him, but he will bounce back," Seaman said. "It was talked about by everybody, but it was one mistake. That is our life as goalkeepers - you can make one mistake and everyone forgets you were brilliant for 89 minutes. It shouldn't end his career as an international." Seaman added: "The manager should build the future around him, Joe Hart and maybe Ben Foster. Those three will be around for a long time. "Joe is obviously first choice at the moment, and on current form there is nobody that could take that away from him."
