Kris Boyd scored five times as Rangers thrashed Dundee United 7-1 to go seven points clear of Celtic in the Scottish Premier League on Wednesday.

Rangers can build an even stronger lead by beating Celtic in the Old Firm derby on Sunday.

The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when referee William Collum awarded a penalty after Darren Dods shoved Kenny Miller in the box.

Boyd sent the spot kick low into the net and he was on target again five minutes later after being fed by Steven Davis' short free kick.

Boyd's third came in the 29th after stabbing home from Miller's cross.

While Damian Casalinuovo pulled one back for the Ibrox visitors immediately after the break, there was no way back for them.

Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra both scored either side of another two from Boyd.

The only sour point of the night for Rangers was a red card for Miller which rules him out of the Celtic match.
