Schweinsteiger to miss World Cup qualifiers

Germany goes into World Cup qualifying without Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who will miss matches against the Faeroe Islands and Austria.

Coach Joachim Loew says Schweinsteiger needs more time to reach his fitness and form after several injuries last season.

With Mario Gomez out injured, Loew picked only one striker - veteran Miroslav Klose - to face the Faeroes on Sept. 7 in Hannover and Austria on Sept. 11 in Vienna.

Captain Pililipp Lahm, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and the Arsenal duo of Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski rejoin the squad after missing the 3-1 loss against Argentina in a friendly on Aug. 15.
