Schalke 'cushion' pleases Magath
Schalke manager Felix Magath feels Sunday's 2-0 win over Cologne
has given his side a valuable cushion in the top three of the
Goals from Joel Matip and Jefferson Farfan ensured a new club record of six-consecutive wins at home to move the Royal Blues back to within touching distance of the league leaders Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, while at the same time leaving fourth-placed Hamburg six points in their wake.
"The win against Cologne was vitally important for the remainder of our season," said Magath. "Given the tough challenges we have in the coming weeks, we have managed to create a points' cushion.
"Now we can afford to even lose a game without dropping a place in the league."
Schalke have also not conceded a goal in their last six matches at the Arena AufSchalke and are in what appears to have become a three-horse race for the title this season.
However, Magath continues to refuse to think of his side as a title candidate.
"We know that we cannot compare ourselves to Bayern," he said. "My team is still too young for that."
Schalke face Magath's former club Bayern twice in the coming month, both at the Arena AufSchalke in the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal semi-final.
