Thomas Schaaf was happy to see Werder Bremen bow out of the Champions League with a resounding win over reigning champions Inter Milan.

With qualification already beyond them, Bremen beat Rafael Benitez's side 3-0, leaving Schaaf more than satisfied.

"That was a good close to the Champions League season," he said.

"The result was good and the way the team played was totally in order. We did well with the things we had planned on doing.

"We played a good game and improved on a lot of things and departed respectably from the competition.

"In the first half we were a bit too tentative, but we said at the break that we wanted to be more courageous.

"The team did that well. You can see some things are coming around - we had some good passing and worked very actively on defence."

Inter may have had a number of their main players absent, but Schaaf was not willing to accept that as a reason behind the win.

He added: "It is clear that Inter Milan will not play very often in this formation. But how the team played was in order.

"Still, every player knows that not everything was perfect. There is no reason to get too high or celebrate exuberantly.

"But the game has to give us strength and confidence for the coming tasks."
