Six-time Brazilian champion Sao Paulo says it has fired coach Emerson Leao.
The announcement comes three days after the team's third loss in six Brazilian league matches, and less than a week after its elimination in the semifinals of the Brazilian Cup, one of the few competitions the team is yet to win.
Leao said he was told by club directors on Tuesday that his contract was being terminated.
Sao Paulo, led by striker Luis Fabiano, lost 1-0 to Portuguesa on Saturday, and fell 2-1 on aggregate to Coritiba in the Brazilian Cup. Sao Paulo is eighth in the 20-team Brazilian league.
