Sao Paulo says it has fired coach Paulo Cesar Carpegiani.

Sao Paulo says in a statement on its website that the decision to dismiss Carpegiani was made to ''give new motivation to the team.''

Milton Cruz has been named interim coach.

Carpegiani's firing on Thursday comes a day after a 1-0 loss to Flamengo, the team's third straight defeat in the Brazilian League. In the two previous games, it lost 2-0 to Botafogo and 5-0 to Corinthians.

Sao Paulo hired Carpegiani in October for his second stint after a spell in 1999.
