Santos takes on Monterrey in Mexican league final
Ruben Romano has coached at least nine different Mexican teams, and he has been on the losing side three times in the final for the league title.
The Argentina-born coach will receive a fourth chance when the two-legged final of the Mexico Apertura championship begins on Thursday, with Romano's Santos hosting Monterrey.
''If I win and get the title, it's for Santos and also for me,'' Romano said. ''But I am not the most important. I'm not going to be a better coach if I get the title, or I don't get the title.''
Monterrey coach Victor Vucetich, meanwhile, has won six league titles in Mexico with four different clubs.
Monterrey finished second in the regular season standings behind Cruz Azul, which was knocked out in the quarterfinals. Santos had the third best regular-season record.
The two clubs have been Mexico's best over the last several seasons. Santos lost the Clausura final six months ago on penalties against Toluca. Monterrey was the 2009 Apertura champion. Vucetich also won Mexico titles with Pachuca, Tecos and Leon.
The showdown features the best two players in the league - Humberto Suazo of Monterrey and Christian Benitez of Santos. Benitez has scored 14 goals this season to 11 for Suzao.
In their only regular-season meeting, Monterrey defeated Santos 2-1 after goals from Suazo and Osvaldo Martinez.
Vucetich was in line two months ago to be appointed Mexico's national team coach, but turned down the job citing personal reasons. The job went instead to Toluca coach Jose Manuel De La Torre.
The second leg of the final is Sunday in Monterrey.
