Santos pulls clear with Toluca triumph

Santos won their fifth straight game with a 3-2 victory over Toluca on Sunday to take the sole lead in the Mexican league standings.

Cruz Azul and Chivas both improved to 22 points - one behind Santos - with Cruz Azul drawing 1-1 with San Luis and Chivas winning 5-2 against Estudiantes Tecos.

Tigres lost 2-0 against Morelia and are in fourth place with 21 points.

Jaguares, Pachuca and Pumas have 20 points. Jaguares drew 1-1 against Atlante, Pachuca lost 3-2 against Tijuana and Pumas lost 4-1 to last-place Atlas.

In other weekend matches, America defeated Monterrey 3-0 and Puebla beat Queretaro 1-0.

Christian Suarez netted an injury-time winner for Santos against nine-man Toluca.

Sinha gave Toluca the lead in the fifth minute, dribbling past five Santos players before putting the ball in the net. Francisco Gamboa was sent off for Toluca three minutes later.

Oribe Peralta scored twice in the space of 15 minutes to give Santos the halftime lead after they went down to 10 men when Felipe Baloy was sent off in the 23rd.

Toluca's Isaac Brizuela made it 2-2 in the 50th, before his team went down to nine men when Diego Novaretti was sent off in the 71st and failed to hold on.

Santos also has a game in hand.

A defensive mix-up allowed Edison Perea to tap the ball in for Cruz Azul in the 83rd after Alfredo Moreno had opened the scoring for San Luis in the 55th.

Marco Fabian scored three goals for Chivas and Erick Torres had two against city rival Estudiantes Tecos. Eduardo Lillingston and Herculez Gomez scored in the second half for Tecos.

Tigres missed their chance to go top after two late Morelia goals from Miguel Sabah and Jaime Lozano.

Jaguares are winless in four matches. Colombian Jackson Martinez put them ahead in the 57th, but Osvaldo Martinez equalized in the 75th for Atlante.

Tijuana secured its first home victory of the season. Juan Pablo Santiago scored two goals for Tijuana and Raul Enrique the other. Pachuca was handed the lead when Tijuana's Joshua Abrego scored an own-goal and Elias Hernanez got the other in the 62nd.

Atlas won its second game of the season. Ricardo Bocanegra scored from 25 yards to give Atlas the lead in the 30th but Francisco Palencia equalized six minutes later. Jahir Barranza scored twice in the second half with Daniel Arreola adding the last goal.

America kept its playoff chances alive, defeating Monterrey on goals by Jose Martinez, Oscar Rojas and Aquivaldo Mosquera.

Monterrey has 17 points and America has 15.

Puebla defeated Queretaro with Colombian Duvier Riascos scoring in the 58th.
