South Africa's news agency says that a sudden cold snap has killed some 500 African penguins.

The cold snap, which also brought snow in parts of the country as temperatures fell below zero Celsius (32 Fahrenheit) , is also likely to affect hundreds of thousands of tourists and fans watching the World Cup here.

The South African Press Association quoted a spokeswoman for the country's national parks saying the penguins died in the last 24 hours due to the cold and wet weather.

Spokeswoman Megan Taplin told SAPA on Tuesday the penguins, aged between few weeks and two months, died in the Eastern Cape, in the south of the country.
