Rooney: I did not hand in Manchester United transfer request
Wayne Rooney insists he never filed a formal transfer request at Manchester United during his fall-out with Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
The Manchester United striker's relationship turned sour with Fergie in 2013 amid rumours he had submitted a transfer request and was subsequently dropped from the starting XI.
With talk of a move to Chelsea or Manchester City gathering pace, the 29-year-old then performed a surprise U-turn, signing a new deal and ending all talk he was set to quit Old Trafford.
And he insists he had no intention to move anywhere else, labelling Ferguson 'the best manager in the world'.
"I went in to see him and I said, 'If you're not going to play me it might be better if I move on'," Rooney reveals in an upcoming BBC documentary.
"And then all of a sudden it was all over the press that I'd put a transfer request in, which I never did.
"I don't know what happened, why it panned out that way, Ferguson was the reason why I wanted to join Manchester United, to work with him.
"In my eyes he is the best manager of all time."
Rooney was named United captain in 2014 and has since gone on to make almost 500 appearances in all competitions for the club.
