Roma tops Basel to take control
AS Roma beat Basel 3-2 in a stirring Champions League match to rise from last and take control of second place in Group E on Wednesday.
Jeremy Menez's well-placed shot in the 16th minute and Francesco Totti's 25th-minute penalty helped the Italian side avenge a 3-1 home loss against the Swiss team two weeks ago.
Basel forward Alex Frei scored from a close-range header in the 69th, and Marco Streller shot against a post five minutes later.
Roma substitute Leandro Greco struck in the 76th, then teenager Xherdan Shaqiri's sweeping shot in the 83rd ensured a tense finish.
Victory lifted Roma to six points from four games.
Leader Bayern Munich has 12, and ensured qualification to the knockout stage by extending its perfect record with a 4-0 victory over Cluj in Romania.
Basel and Cluj each has three points and meet on Nov. 23, when Roma hosts Bayern.
Roma led after the hosts dominated early on, threatening three times in quick succession.
Benjamin Huggel's shot from three meters (yards) was blocked by goalkeeper Julio Sergio, Streller was denied a clear chance by defender Juan's interception, then Shaqiri shot too high from inside the penalty area.
Menez then pounced when Mirko Vucinic was muscled off the ball to score from 16 meters.
Nine minutes later, Totti's spot-kick went through the hands of Franco Costanzo diving to his right. The penalty was awarded after Basel winger Valentin Stocker dragged down John Arne Riise with an outstretched arm and was booked.
Basel started the second half aggressively and defender David Abraham fired a long-distance shot just high and wide.
Frei made it 2-1, exploiting poor communication in the Roma defense, before Streller's fierce low shot was deflected on to the left post.
Greco killed Basel's rally with a cross-shot from 10 meters one minute after entering the field.
Shaqiri gave the home side late hope and midfielder Yapo Gilles Yapi almost leveled, but his shot was pushed aside by the diving Sergio.
Basel finished with 10 men when Stocker fouled Totti in stoppage time and was shown a second yellow card.
