RM: Diame lucky to avoid break

Martinez is breathing a sigh of relief after discovering Diame only suffered minor ankle ligament damage in his side's defeat to Fulham at the DW Stadium last Saturday. The Senegal international even has an outside chance of being fit for this weekend's crucial encounter with Wolves at Molineux, which is far better than Martinez feared when Diame first went down. "We have been very lucky," the Latics chief said. "It was a horrific challenge. We have seen it a few times. At the moment of contact his leg is off the ground. "If it had been on the ground, it would have been a break. Thankfully, he has only damaged his ligaments." Martinez has bitten his tongue over the performance of referee Mike Jones, who he felt was poor for both sides. A lengthy absence for Diame might have been too much. Happily, that is not the case, with Martinez now crossing his fingers for the weekend. "I don't think it is going to be too long," he said. "We will see how he develops over the next 48 hours. "Momo suffered two very tough tackles in 45 seconds and received no protection at all. "I still have hope for Sunday but mainly, we are just glad it is not serious."
