River Plate claims Argentina's first-division title with five-goal thrashing
River Plate won the Argentine first-division title Sunday, defeating Quilmes 5-0 at the club's Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.
It was River's first title since 2008, having been relegated to the second division in 2011. Like most countries in Latin America, Argentina divides the season into two halves. San Lorenzo won the first-half title this season.
Fernando Cavenaghi scored two goals and Gabriel Mercado, Cristian Ledesma and Teofilo Gutierrez added the others for River, one of Argentina's biggest clubs.
"I'll never forget this match," said Gutierrez, one of three Colombians playing for River.
River finished with 37 points, five ahead of Estudiantes and six clear of Gimnasia. Estudiantes lost if final-round match 2-1 at Tigre on Sunday, and Gimnasia fell 1-0 to Boca Juniors.
River's last title came under coach Diego Simeone - now at Atletico Madrid - and with players like Radamel Falcao and Alexis Sanchez.
