Police in Chile say 217 people have been detained for rioting as thousands of Universidad de Chile fans spent Wednesday night celebrating the club's Copa Sudamericana victory.

Police in Santiago say 151 public transport buses were attacked by fans and 18 drivers were injured.

Anti-riot squads used water cannons and tear gas to control the disorder and try to disperse fans.

The Copa Sudamericana is South America's second most important club competition after the Copa Libertadores.
