Rio: Maracana will be ready for Confederations Cup

Rio de Janeiro city officials say Maracana's renovation will be completed in time for the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.

There were concerns construction would be delayed because it was recently discovered that the stadium needs an entirely new roof, but officials guaranteed that it would be ready by the end of 2012.

The new roof will increase the costs to the city, however. The original project was estimated at about $430 million, but officials say the final cost will reach about $590 million.

The stadium also will be used for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Sao Paulo, South America's biggest city, had already been ruled out of the Confederations Cup because it has yet to begin building its stadium for the 2014 World Cup.
