Struggling French club Nice has sacked coach Eric Roy after a run of only one win in seven matches.

Nice is only one place above the relegation zone in 17th place after 13 matches.

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere told Nice-Matin newspaper on Tuesday that ''this shake-up is the fruit of a long and collective thought process, and not a decision that was taken hurriedly.''

Rivere added that Roy's assistant coach Rene Marsiglia will take charge of the team for Saturday's home game against Saint Etienne, while Roy will stay with the club in a general manager's role.
