Liverpool have been informed by the Italian FA (FIGC) that Fabio Borini has suffered a foot injury while away with their Under-21 side.

Borini, who moved to Anfield over the summer and is still looking to make his mark on Merseyside, has fractured a bone in his right foot.

He picked up the knock in training ahead of a European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Sweden.

An MRI scan on Thursday revealed the full extent of the injury and news of his setback represents a considerable blow for his club and country.

"The Liverpool striker has fractured the scaphoid bone in his right foot and will miss the play-offs with Sweden," read a statement released on the FIGC's official website.

Borini will be hoping the ailment does not keep him sidelined for long, as Liverpool are already short on forwards and were hoping to see the 21-year-old open his Premier League goal account in the not too distant future.
