The Croatian Football Federation (CFF) has confirmed that Real Madrid star Luka Modric will be sidelined for three months with a thigh tear.

The 29-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during the first half of Croatia's Euro 2016 qualifier with Italy on Sunday, which ended in a 1-1 draw, but the CFF insists the midfielder will not require surgery.

"MRI scans in Madrid showed that it was a serious injury," read a statement from the CFF.

"Due to the complete insertions of muscles being separated in his left leg, Modric will be away from the pitch for about three months. Surgery will not be needed, Modric will be treated with conservative methods."

Modric has featured in all but one of Madrid's La Liga matches this season as Carlo Ancelotti's side sit two points clear at the top of the table.

Modric has also started in all four of the club's Champions League fixtures this term, with Madrid already reaching the knockout phase with two games remaining.
